Do Wedding Gold Gifts Count as Mehir?

Gold given at a wedding does not automatically count as mehir (also known as mahr). For jewelry to stand in for the mehir, the couple must have clearly agreed on this in advance.

For example, if it was agreed before the nikah (Islamic marriage ceremony) that "five gold bracelets will be given as mehir" and those bracelets were placed on the bride at the wedding, that gold can be accepted as mehir. Similarly, gold given to the bride by the groom or the groom's family may be counted as part of the mehir if local custom treats it that way.

By contrast, gold that wedding guests give to the bride or groom as gifts is a wedding gift separate from the mehir, unless otherwise agreed beforehand. It is therefore not correct to deduct every piece of gold given at the wedding directly from the previously agreed mehir amount.

To avoid uncertainty, when the mehir is being determined the couple should clearly discuss whether the gold to be given at the wedding is included in the mehir, which pieces of gold will count as mehir, and how much of the total mehir amount they will offset.

MehirApp helps couples record the type and amount of mehir they have agreed on, mark previously given gold as paid mehir, and track the remaining mehir amount. This makes the distinction between wedding jewelry and mehir clear, and allows the mehir process to be managed more transparently within the couple's shared financial plan.
