Mehir: Meaning, Types and How It Is Determined

Mehir (also known as mahr) is the economic value that the husband gives, or pledges to give, to the wife at the time of marriage. Money, gold, silver, jewelry, or any other asset the parties agree on can be designated as mehir. The mehir is a right that belongs directly to the woman, and she decides how it will be used.

Mehir is handled in two basic forms according to when it is paid. Prompt mehir is paid at the time of marriage or shortly afterward. Deferred mehir can be paid at a future date set by the couple, when certain conditions are met, or in installments. The parties may also agree to pay part of the mehir upfront and the remainder on a deferred basis.

When determining the mehir, agreeing only on the amount is not enough. The type of mehir, its measure, the time of payment, and the payment method should be clearly stated. For example, if the mehir will be set in gold, the type, grams, or quantity of the gold should be specified; if it will be set in money, the amount and the currency should be made clear.

It is also important that the amount is realistic, payable, and suited to the parties' economic circumstances. A mehir that is vague or seems impossible to fulfill can lead to disputes later on. For this reason, mehir should be treated as a clear and sustainable financial plan that the couple evaluates together.

MehirApp supports couples in recording the type, amount, and payment plan of their mehir, and in tracking payments made and the remaining mehir amount. With solutions such as the Mehir Wallet, gold and silver wallets, MehirBES (private pension), and optional Mehir Life Insurance, the mehir can be turned into part of the couple's shared savings and family finance plan.
