Mehr-i muaccel (prompt mehir, paid at the time of marriage) is the portion of the mehir (also known as mahr) determined at marriage that is agreed to be paid immediately or within a short time. In modern terms, it can simply be called prompt mehir. The mehir scheduled to be paid at a future date is called mehr-i müeccel (deferred mehir).
Couples may set the entire mehir as prompt, or agree that part of it is mehr-i muaccel and the remainder deferred mehir. For example, if a total of 50 grams of gold is set as mehir, 10 grams may be given at the time of marriage, while the remaining 40 grams are scheduled to be paid on agreed dates.
When setting mehr-i muaccel, the type and amount of the mehir should be clearly stated. Instead of general expressions like “some gold” or “jewelry,” the type, weight, or number of gold pieces should be specified; if set in money, the amount and currency should be written down. This prevents any uncertainty about which value has been delivered.
It is also important to record the date and amount of the prompt mehir delivered to the woman. If more than one payment will be made, each payment should be noted separately and deducted from the total prompt mehir amount.
Mehr-i muaccel is an economic value that belongs directly to the woman. Wedding expenses, household goods, gifts given to the family during the jewelry ceremony, or shared living costs do not count as prompt mehir unless the couple explicitly designates them as mehir.
