Mehr-i müeccel (deferred mehir) is the portion of the mehir (also known as mahr) determined at marriage that is not paid immediately but agreed to be paid at a future date. In modern terms, it can simply be called deferred mehir. The portion of the mehir paid during the nikah (Islamic marriage ceremony) is called mehr-i muaccel (prompt mehir, paid at the time of marriage).
Couples may set the entire mehir as deferred, or agree that part is paid upfront and the remainder as mehr-i müeccel. For example, out of 50 grams of gold, 10 grams may be given at the time of marriage while the remaining 40 grams are scheduled to be paid later.
When setting mehr-i müeccel, writing down only the amount is not enough. The payment date or the condition triggering payment must be clearly stated. A specific date, an installment plan, or any other timing the couple agrees on can be used. In classical practice, when no clear due date was set, custom and tradition were taken into account, and the mehir was considered due in the event of death or divorce.
Deferred mehir is a financial obligation that must be fulfilled when it falls due. For this reason, instead of a vague expression like “gold to be given in the future,” the type, weight, or number of gold pieces should be made clear. If set in money, the amount and currency should be stated; if it will be paid in installments, the amount and date of each installment should be written down.
It is also important that the amount is realistic and payable. Rather than a very high commitment with little chance of being fulfilled, it is healthier to create a payment plan that fits the couple’s financial circumstances and can be tracked.
MehirApp helps couples record their prompt and deferred mehir amounts separately, create a payment plan, and track the remaining mehir balance after each payment. This turns mehr-i müeccel from a vague future promise into a planned and traceable financial responsibility.
Define your deferred mehir clearly, plan the payment schedule together, and track it with MehirApp.
